In the realm of modern Western-style residences, it has become commonplace to incorporate a swimming pool within the confines of the garden, especially in the more opulent and extravagant properties. From the perspective of Feng Shui, we strongly discourage the construction of square-shaped pools. Why, you ask? The reasoning behind it is quite straightforward! It is because, from the holistic viewpoint of Yin and Yang Feng Shui, a square-shaped pool evokes the shape of the character “哭” (kū), meaning “weep” in Chinese.
In the realm of Feng Shui, pools shaped like pig kidneys or gourds are highly favored. Circular pools are deemed even more auspicious, drawing admiration from Feng Shui masters and practitioners alike; we refer to them as “zones of empathy.” In Feng Shui terms, rectangular pools are labeled as “zones of apathy,” suggesting that inhabitants might possess a less affable disposition and lack emotional warmth.
Upon completion, swimming pools often feature tiles arranged in decorative patterns on the pool floor. Great care must be taken during the installation of these tiles. It is crucial to avoid inappropriate designs. I once observed a swimming pool owned by a wealthy Chinese entrepreneur in California, USA. Looking down from above, the tiles at the bottom formed a triangle, resembling an arrow piercing a heart.
Now, let us delve into the positioning of private pools within one’s residence. The simplest method involves aligning the pool’s location with the Water or Non-Water nature of the occupants’ BaZi (Eight Characters) charts, employing the principles of the I Ching, Eight Trigrams, and Nine Palaces. I, as the adept practitioner, have expounded upon this approach extensively in my writings. When it comes to pool design, the rounder and more harmonious the shape – resembling the letter “S” or the form of a gourd – the more favorable it is. This design adheres to the principles of Feng Shui, particularly suitable for personal abodes.
When a swimming pool is encompassed within a household or property, it assumes significance within the context of Feng Shui. In this scenario, the conventional competition-style rectangular or square pools are inappropriate. Instead, a pool should exhibit a circular shape, aligning with the principles of Feng Shui. From the perspective of the Five Elements, a pool represents a profoundly watery domain. According to my teachings in the Five Elements Feng Shui, it is advantageous to undertake pool construction during the summer months.
However, should one choose not to follow this approach, adhering to the Eight Mansions Feng Shui, a pool can be ideally situated in the southwest for those family members whose BaZi charts favor Water. For instance, if the mother’s BaZi chart requires the presence of Water, this positioning would be most suitable.
The question of whether to plant flowers, shrubs, or trees around the pool depends on the occupants’ individual BaZi and the presence or absence of the Wood element. If Wood is required, a variety of plants can be cultivated. Water nourishing Wood significantly enhances the Wood element’s strength.
Allow me to add a crucial point here, according to the Eight Mansions Feng Shui. Seeing water in the southwest augurs well for wealth accumulation, while water in the northeast signifies financial depletion. Therefore, even if a family member’s BaZi chart requires the presence of Water, constructing a pool in the northeast of one’s property should be avoided at all costs. From the perspective of Yin and Yang Feng Shui, a swimming pool should never be positioned behind a house. Having a pool in this location implies a precarious situation akin to being backed into a corner, a position one should steadfastly avoid! Remember this!
If one’s BaZi chart despises the Wood element, there is no need to plant anything around the pool. Regarding the pool’s setup, it is crucial to ensure that the water remains consistently clear. Clear water symbolizes wealth. Murky or dirty water, on the other hand, hinders the generation of wealth. Therefore, for households with a pool, it is imperative to maintain the water’s cleanliness.
Particularly, in luxurious villas in Sanya, Hainan, where pools are a standard feature, the pools often face the sea. The influence of the vast ocean on Feng Shui cannot be underestimated. It profoundly impacts the wealth of the residence. The tumultuous waves of the sea represent ruthless wealth, hard-earned and relentless.
Furthermore, whether the seawater flows in or out signifies the inflow or outflow of money, the dispersion or accumulation of wealth. It is essential to keep the pool water immaculate and pristine at all times.
